Egypt or Syria. Stone paste squared-off hexagonal tile. The off-white ground is painted in black with two intersecting triangles to form a six-pointed star, with subsidiary floral motifs. The unusual central motif, also painted in blue, is a Chinese inspired phoenix set amongst tendrils. 15th century. 5.75 x 6.6 in. {14.6 x 16.7 cm.} Condition: Glaze crackle, chips to surface and edges. |
