Tile 21.

Syria {Damascus}

A thickly glazed square stone paste border tile painted in underglaze cobalt blue and black. Outlined in black, a small central rosette is contained within a ring of four trefoil cartouches, all in white reserved against a deep cobalt ground which is in turn reserved against a white ground. A scrolling device joins each side of the cartouche along with small arabesques. There are two simple black guard stripes top and bottom inside a wide white border.
17th/18th century.
