Part II Tile 9. Syria {Damascus} A stone paste tile painted in underglaze cobalt blue, apple green and turquoise. A turquoise ogival lattice, serrated in white and filled with white plum blossoms, joins two cusped medallions. Although only a small part of the medallion on the left remains, enough of the one on the right remains to show part of a flower spray in white and outlined in black, rising out of a composite floral palmette against an apple green background. The centre of the tile is occupied by a large bunch of grapes, a tulip, a vine leaf and tendrils reserved against a cobalt blue ground. 16th century. 8 x 10.5 in. {20.3 x 26.6 cm.} c.f. Ettinghausen, R. Islamic Art in the Metropolitan Museum, 1972. One of the group of Damascus tiles with the use of apple green mentioned on p.104 when referring to the Lockwood de Forest collection. Condition: Intact. Minor chipping to some edges |
